"For Gropius, in line with the ideas of the 'Arbeitsrat', building was a social, intellectual and symbolic activity. It reconciled previously separate disciplines and callings and united them in a common task. Building was to level class differences and bring layman and artist together. This new philosophy of building was encapsulated in Lyonel Feininger's woodcut of a cathedral which illustrated the cover of the four-page Bauhaus Manifesto: beams of light converge upon the cathedral's three spires, representing the three arts of painting, sculpture and architecture."
